Rustophone
Rustophone, a unique and innovative instrument, emerges as a harmonious synthesis of discarded rusted iron materials, meticulously tuned to specific frequencies and artistically assembled into a sculpture. Conceived during the residency of Yiannis Loukos at AADKin Blanca, Spain, this creation draws inspiration from the rich iron culture deeply embedded in the region's heritage.
In a quest to breathe life into the neglected remnants of iron, Loukos scoured garbage dumps and metal yards, seeking out rusted iron parts that had been discarded and deemed lifeless. The discarded materials, once identified as "dead," became the canvas for Loukos's sonic exploration and research into the realm of rusted sound.
Through careful modifications and consideration of resonance, Loukos has crafted an instrument that not only repurposes discarded materials but also unlocks the mysteries of their acoustic potential.
The instrument becomes a vessel for sonic experimentation, inviting audiences to ponder a fascinating question: What does all this garbage sound like? Rustophone stands as a testament to the symbiotic relationship between art and discarded materials, breathing new life into the forgotten echoes of the region's iron culture. It not only challenges conventional notions of waste but also prompts contemplation on the hidden, expressive voices embedded within the rusted remnants of our material world.
